Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic acid (EDTA) preserves the blood's biological components very well, EDTA salts are used to anticoagulate whole blood for haematological research. By forming compounds with metal ions like calcium, it inhibits the coagulation cascade and functions as an anticoagulant. EDTA anticoagulation is irreversible.
When the fill level is appropriate, the EDTA concentration in YAVAC® & YALAB® tubes is 1.8 mg per milliliter of complete blood, as advised by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and the International Council Society of Haematology (ICSH).
The institutes recommend dipotassium EDTA salt (K EDTA) for 2 haematological investigation. K EDTA is used in both tubes in spray dried form.
Correct mixing (8-10 inversions) of the EDTA tube immediately after the blood sample has been taken is extremely important to avoid microclotting.
